John E. Shannon Sr., was born near Memphis, Tennessee in Shelby County on July 31, 1946. His parents were Tom and Fannie Shannon. He was one of seven children, brought up with a denominational background including Methodist, Baptist, and Roman Catholic. Shannon received his education in Bartlett, Tennessee and in Cordova, Tennessee. He is a former army paratrooper and Vietnam veteran. Shannon is married to the former Sandra Lott. They have two children, John Jr., and Erika.
In January, 1978 he obeyed the gospel, left Roman Catholicism, and was added to the Lord’s Church. Six months later he preached his first gospel sermon, “The Blood of Christ.” He was taught by David Shanks, his father in the gospel, who later recommended him for the work at the North Seventh Street Church of Christ and he was accepted.
May, 1997, North Seventh Street Church relocated to what is known now as the James Road church of Christ. This location was previously known as the Mountain Terrace church of Christ in the Frayser area of Memphis, Tennessee. His dedication to the work has been a major role in the growth of the congregation making it necessary to relocate to this new facility. A man of God with a vision for the Lord’s church which has no color barriers.
Shannon is a graduate of the Memphis School of Preaching and also completed the Graduate Program. He is in constant demand for gospel meetings, lectureships, and tent meetings over several different states, such as Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. He has also preached in the Bahamas.
Shannon’s ministry also includes the publication of gospel sermons, using his well-known trademark “Charts”. Preaching the gospel in a book entitled “Here it is in Black and White.” Shannon and brother in Christ, Burt Jones, have had this book greatly recommended for study and usage to the glory of God. Shannon’s ministry also included the vision to have a safe haven, a Christian home for children. “The Jericho Home for Children” located next to the church building became a reality in 2001 as a result of that vision.
